There is only small amount of information about the Byzantine times and the town suffered during the  Arab-Byzantine Wars and mostly abandoned. The city fortified in 8th century and by the 10th century city became Makri or Makre. The ancient name was forgotten. The city lived in a renewed prosperity in 12 and 13th centuries. The city walls enlarged and city recorded as a center of perfume production and trade. Early 13th century the city fell under the rules of Turks. In 1424 the city became a part of Ottoman Empire. There was a great number of Greek population in Fethiye who returned to Greece after the population exchange between Greece and Turkey.
